Applications are accepted on a rolling basis through April 1, 2027. Through a generous donation from emerita professor Dr. Patricia Bell-Scott, WGS is able to fund projects that draw on or contribute to Black Women's Studies. Past projects have included book clubs, 'zines, conference presentations, journal articles, community outreach, and public art. Application Form All applicants must use this form to request funds. Letter of Support Each project must be accompanied by a letter of support from a faculty member (share the link with them or direct them to this page). FAQs: Who is eligible for this fund? This fund is open to Women's and Gender Studies students (graduate and undergraduate) ONLY. WGS majors, minors, LGBTQ+ Studies Certificates, Gender & Health Certificates, and WGS Graduate Certificates all count. What is Black Women's Studies? In their 1985 piece “Black Women’s Studies: A View from the Margin” Beverly Guy-Sheftall and Patricia Bell-Scott articulated Black Women’s Studies as a new field that filled in the vacuum left in Black Studies and Women’s Studies, noting "Black women's studies is the scholarly investigation of the history, cultures and experiences of Black women. This new field confronts the problem of gender bias in Black studies and racial bias in women's studies and analyzes the ways in which gender/race form an "otherness" both in relationship to Black men and in relationship to non-black women." How much money can I request? You can request up to $1000 per project, with most projects being funded for $500-$1000. Requests in excess of $1000 will not be considered. What does this fund support? As stated above, this fund is for projects that draw on or contribute to Black Feminist Studies. This includes traditional academic pursuits as well as creative/artistic work, community-based engagement, and anything else that relates to the theme. Can I apply to this fund more than once? Yes! Repeat applications are allowed. However, we may prioritize first-time applicants if funds are limited. Can I combine this fund with another funding source? Absolutely! We encourage students to combine these funds with other sources such as CURO or department or discipline specific funds. Do I need a faculty supervisor? You do not need to work with a mentor or supervisor for this fund, but you DO need to submit a letter of support from a faculty member who is familiar with you and your project. (See the link to the form at the top of the page.) I still have questions! No worries! Email Program Director Elise Robinson at Elise.Robinson@uga.edu and she will do her best to get you answers!
