Crabs in the Barrel Syndrome? Race, Gender, and Intra-Group Conflict within the Workplace

This research focuses on minority women’s subjective experiences of intra-group conflict within organizations. Crabs in the Barrel Syndrome (CBS) is a metaphorical representation of attitudes and behaviors that violate social norms of helping and support between in-group members (Miller, 2014; 2018). This talk will focus on qualitative data drawn from personal blogs that describes the perceived motivation, beliefs and behaviors of victims and perpetrators of CBS. The purpose of this research is to help distinguish the construct from extant theoretical frameworks on intra-group work conflict and encourage further exploration of this phenomenon.
