The answer given by ‘mission feminists’ in the early twentieth century I will present a case study of a group of women in early-twentieth-century Norway who advocated for greater gender equality in Christian mission organizations. While doing so, they had various interactions with the early organized “women’s movement” in Norway. In this talk I will explore the tensions between the Christian mission women and the “women’s rights” women. How did their goals differ? Which arguments did they put forward? And how did they think differently about what it meant to be a woman?
